Their mission is to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando (acted by Patricia Clarkson) who was admitted to Ashecliffe after an incident involving her children. Shutter Island offers a captivating blend of suspense and intrigue especially when viewers are invited to join Teddy in unraveling the puzzle surrounding Rachels vanishing act. The performances across the board are commendable those of DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley in his role as the psychiatrist John Cawley; however it is truly the setting that steals the spotlight. From the island battered by rain, to Ashecliffes prison cells and eerie hallways shrouded in silence the film exudes an atmosphere that seeps into every frame.
Scorseses decision to use lighting creates shadows that enhance the atmosphere of the movie adding to its sense of confinement and somber tone. While the film may feel a bit slow at times during its runtime of, over 2 hours it remains a psychological thriller that makes you feel like your time was worthwhile.
