I prefer not to delve into politics. Sacha Baron Cohens latest film, The Dictator raises some thought provoking points.
The movie revolves around General Aladeen, the ruler of Wadiya, an nation. Aladeen is portrayed as a leader who flaunts his fleet of gold Humvees orders beheadings for offenses and manipulates events to always come out on top in various competitions, like the Olympics and Oscar ceremonies.
At the beginning of the film Aladeen heads to New York with a mission to persuade the United Nations that his nuclear weapons program is, for purposes (or so he claims). However things take a turn when his uncle orchestrates his abduction and replaces him with a body in an attempt to transition Wadiya into a democracy and open up its oil markets.
The plan was for the kidnapper to eliminate Aladeen. Ends up managing to shave off his iconic beard before Aladeen escapes onto the bustling streets of New York. Now faced with reclaiming his throne without his trademark beard as recognition factor poses quite a challenge for Aladeen.
You know it’s funny how nobody seems to realize that Jason Segel and Zach Galifianakis could easily pass off as the person especially if one of them decides to grow a beard.. In the midst of it all he finds himself falling in love (as expected). Starts to see the advantages of turning his nation into a democracy (kind of).
I must admit though the previous summary did seem a bit biased, towards democracy. So here’s me extending my apologies to all you readers, on Aish.com who might also happen to be dictators. Let me just share a snippet from the movies material; “The Dictator” portrays “the tale of a dictator who goes to great lengths to ensure that democracy never sets foot in the land he has ruled with such affection.”
