During his match, against Gael Monfils at the Monte Carlo Masters Daniil Medvedev received a warning from the umpire for raising his voice at a line judge. The incident occurred while Medvedev, a 28 year player from Russia was leading 6 2 1 2 and expressed disagreement over two calls made on the baseline by shouting at the official.
Umpire Mohamed Lahyani intervened twice to review the calls and calm down Medvedev. He urged Medvedev not to shout at the line judge reminding him that mistakes can happen.
Despite facing a setback in that game and trailing 4 1 after being 40 15 Medvedev managed to turn things around by winning five games to secure victory over Monfils.
The dispute started when Monfils hit a shot that was initially called out but later ruled in by Lahyani after checking. This decision visibly frustrated Medvedev, when Hawk Eye technology indicated that the shot was indeed out.
In another instance a shot, by Monfils was called in even though it had crossed beyond the baseline.Medvedev raised his voice in disagreement prompting Lahyani to review the call more. This time the umpire sided with the world number four. Awarded him the point only for him to later lose that game.
During a break, in play Medvedev continued to argue with the umpire expressing frustration. He even vented by hitting the canopy of his chair.
When Lahyani mentioned an apology if he was mistaken Medvedev retorted, questioning how an apology could make up for losing the game on a call. He criticized the technology use.
Post match Medvedev left a message “in or out?” on a TV camera lens. Still exchanged handshakes with Lahyani.
In his match on Thursday he will face fellow Russian player Karen Khachanov in the round of 16.
Reflecting on his emotions during the game Medvedev expressed satisfaction, at maintaining composure and aiming to improve in that aspect this year. Despite outbursts he strongly believed that the disputed call was wrong.
“I’m a bit disappointed because I could have won the game maybe with a score of 6 2.. I’m glad that I was able to make a comeback from being 4 1 to win the set.”
Rublev exits while other top players move forward
In matches the action was halted on Wednesday night due, to rain affecting the mens second round games.
Denmarks Holger Rune, seeded seventh is currently leading by one set against Sumit Nagal from India. Meanwhile ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov is ahead by one set against Serbian player Miomir Kecmanovic.
Both matches are scheduled to resume on Thursday.
Today defending champion Andrey Rublev was defeated in sets in the second round by Alexei Popyrin.
The unseeded Australian player Popyrin triumphed over the seeded Rublev with scores of 6 4 6 4. Will face fellow Australian Alex de Minaur next.
“I’m really feeling good about my performance ” said Popyrin, aged 24. “I’m delighted to have beaten someone who was, in form confident and held the title.”
On another note second seed Jannik Sinner has advanced to the round of 16. The Australian Open winner defeated American Sebastian Korda in sets. With scores of 6 1 6 2. In his clay match this year. He is set to play against unseeded German player Jan Lennard Struff on Thursday.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, a two time champion and the 12th seed advanced to the round with a victory, over Argentine player Tomas Etcheverry. Up Tsitsipas will face off against fifth seed Alexander Zverev, who secured a win against Austrian player Sebastian Ofner this week. Additionally eighth seed Casper Ruud emerged victorious in his match, against Chiles Alejandro Tabilo with a score of 6 2 6 4.
